We cordially invite you to the lecture Choral Music and Musicians in Baroque Duchcov and Its Surroundings, which will take place on January 23, 2018, at 5 PM.
The choral musical culture that developed in the area of northwestern Podkrušnohoří during the 17th and 18th centuries reached a remarkable level. Among the significant, music-friendly locations in this area during the Baroque era was the Valdštejn Duchcov. The beginnings of more serious, artfully conceived musical activities can be traced back to the second half of the 17th century, particularly in the sacred environment, when the town church of St. George was equipped with new organs. However, it was primarily in 1677 that the pious Brotherhood in honor of St. Cecilia was founded, whose founding document provides a more or less convincing proof of the existence of a church ensemble, as well as of figuratively performed productions. During the first half of the 18th century, we then recognize a mature form of functioning of the music-liturgical operation. The musical events in Baroque Duchcov clearly exhibit a connection with a higher cultural-historical whole of regional and perhaps even higher significance. This presents us with the future gradual unveiling of an extraordinary, surprisingly generous heritage, the full appreciation of which has still not been achieved. Supplemented with musical examples.
