“Time” capsule from the demolished building of the Regional Court at I. náměstí in Old Most
The building of the regional court in Old Most, completed in 1883, was one of the successes of the famous mayor Carlo von Pohnert, and it was this building that brought him a noble title. A representative location was chosen for its placement at 1. náměstí in the historic center of Most, where the old Renaissance town hall once stood. A number of local entrepreneurs participated in the realization of this ambitious project, many of whom were also members of the then Most city council.
At the beginning of October 1883, a ceremony was organized to open the completed building of the Regional Court, attended by all representatives of the municipal government as well as the wider public. The event was, after all, announced in the local press in advance. The ceremony also included the placement of a commemorative capsule under the final stone of the entire building.
The tin capsule, measuring 410x260x155 mm, was made by A.F. Mahner “in Brüx” and, in addition to his name and the year on the inside, it was adorned with an engraving of the city coat of arms. A large quantity of various materials was then placed inside.
In 1977, during the demolition of buildings at I. náměstí in Old Most, the capsule was removed from the wall and the construction workers immediately handed it over to the then Public Security (police). The police took the capsule to the District Museum in Most, where it remained stored in the depository for many years. It was first presented to the public in 2018, but it has not yet been exhibited for public viewing. Now, after the treatment of all the items from the capsule, we present it as the exhibit of the month of October – the month in which it was bricked into the old building of the Regional Court 139 years ago.
