The Regional Museum and Gallery in Most will hold a lecture on Tuesday, November 1st at 5 PM
by Mgr. Petr Žákovský, Ph. D. and Mgr. Patrick Bárta from the Archaeological Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno, v. v. i.:
Medieval Sword as an Archaeological, Technological, and Cultural-Historical Phenomenon
In the context of a recently conducted comprehensive scientific study of all medieval and early modern swords from the territory of the Czech Republic, the lecture presents this significant phenomenon from two perspectives: archaeological-historical and construction-craft. It will show not only the development of their shapes, constructions, and decorations but also the associated cultural-symbolic significance and its transformations over the centuries.
Mgr. Petr Žákovský, Ph. D. - Since 2017, he has been working at the Archaeological Institute in Brno as a research worker. He is the author or co-author of dozens of scientific studies and monographs. He specializes in the material culture of the Middle Ages and the early modern period, particularly in the detailed research of medieval and early modern militaria and generally the evidence of warfare in material culture. In this context, he also focuses on battlefield archaeology with a primary emphasis on medieval battlefields and the disappearance of human settlements due to war events.
Mgr. Patrick Bárta – Since 2018, he has also been working as a conservator-restorer of metals at the Archaeological Institute in Brno. However, he is not only a studied conservator by profession but also a swordsmith, specializing in the production of replicas of European weapons from the birth of Christ to the 9th century. He collaborates with many museums both domestically and abroad, as well as with professional and academic institutions, and occasionally lectures at the university.
