Exhibit of the Month 4 / 2016

Melanoflogite

Melanoflogite is a very rare mineral that has only been found at 34 locations in five countries around the world - in Italy, Japan, Ukraine, the USA, and the Czech Republic. Its physical-chemical composition is a low-temperature polymorphic modification of quartz material. Its pseudomorphs after other minerals are very common.

In 2014, several cavities filled with snow-white mineral, originally thought to be dolomite, were discovered in a bentonite mine east of the village of Braňany.

Subsequent analyses revealed that it is the rare mineral melanoflogite. Braňany thus became the third site of this mineral in the Czech Republic, after Chvaletice in the Pardubice region and Korozluky in the Most region.

The exhibited specimen is probably the largest sample of this mineral found in the world!
