Exhibit of the Month 1 / 2017
Fossilized Tree
In 2015, a unique specimen of a part of a fossilized tree was found in the mining area of the Vršany quarry. The discovered trunk is extraordinary for its preservation of several prominent "knots" or stumps from branches. The trunk is red due to the presence of iron compounds. The fossil is 15-20 million years old and originates from the Miocene epoch of the Middle Tertiary.
The unique fossil was donated to the Regional Museum in Most by Vršanská uhelná a.s., a member of the Czech Coal Group, a.s. Special thanks for the transfer of the fossil to the museum's collections go to Ing. Petr Šulck.
