Biography of the author of the novel Gymnázium, Václav Budinský

PhDr. Václav Budinský, writer, poet, painter, publicist, and consultant, spent his youth in Most. He graduated from the local Gymnasium, about which he wrote the eponymous humorous novel. He studied at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, where he later returned as a university teacher. He dealt with the issues of lifestyle with a special focus on humor, gastronomy, erotica, and the possibilities of influencing feelings, moods, and value orientations.

He founded the science of humorology and also bubuism, which is defined as a collection of non-traditional scientific disciplines, as a specific approach to reality, and as a concept of an original way of life.

It is a unique system connecting reality, original mystification, and recese, which even joked with its creator, who during the totalitarian regime published several-page bubuistic New Year greetings for his friends and students every year. However, one time some "good Samaritan" sent it to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, where it caused a great stir. The head of the higher education department called the dean, and the founder of bubuism at the faculty was immediately dismissed.

After leaving the faculty until 1989, and shortly thereafter, he worked as a freelance artist in the field of spoken word. Currently, in addition to writing books, of which he has published more than seventy, he works as a consultant in marketing, effective communication, and creative methodology, as well as being the author of several projects. He is a co-founder of the company TopLiveCzech, which deals with top gastronomy and introduced a system for evaluating luxury restaurants with golden lions. He also founded the Institute for Gastronomy and Regional Products.

Among his extensive works, titles dedicated to humor and also the Dictionary of Happiness and Well-being have attracted attention. In this publication, he offers unconventional ways to overcome stress and the optimal path to mental balance. A similar goal is served by the book Images of Positive Energy, which was created from 120 oil paintings. It is part of a large project, within which words will also receive their indispensable space.

The novel Gymnázium is being published for the tenth time. It was first published secretly during the totalitarian period as a samizdat in a print run of forty copies. It has been published twice by the largest Czech publishing house Euromedia. It is a unique work that combines timeless, humorously presented questions of adolescence and high school studies with real characters and strong autobiographical elements.
