The exhibition of medieval art at the Chomutov Museum concluded the cross-border project
The Czech-German cross-border project in the Cooperation Program Czech Republic – Free State of Saxony 2014 – 2020 “Art of the Late Middle Ages in the Mining Area of the Ore Mountains” successfully achieved its milestones through the implementation of individual activities. The goals for the protection and preservation of the cultural heritage of the Ústí Region were fulfilled by restoring five artworks from the region's property, which are managed by the Regional Museum in Chomutov (Retable with St. Barbara), the Regional Museum and Gallery in Most (Saint Anne the Third, Votive Panel of the Master I. W., Throne Madonna) and the Regional Museum in Teplice (Madonna from Krupka).
The works are presented in the exhibition “Krušnohoří / Erzgebirge. Art of the Late Middle Ages,” which is prepared for visitors at the Regional Museum in Chomutov in the exhibition hall of the ancient town hall in 1st May Square.
The exhibition involves project partners Ústí Region, Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden, and the Regional Museum and Gallery in Most. It includes a total of three main lines: restoration and material research of artworks, artistic techniques in the context of individual works, and artistic development in the mining area of the Ore Mountains. In addition to the restored artworks, the installation also includes works loaned from both German and Czech sides, with all museums established by the region and church institutions contributing loans. The exhibited items are accompanied by panels that provide important dates and information related to the entire project through text and images. Notable are the illustrative examples of artistic techniques, which are the results of student works from Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden and were created under the guidance of Prof. Ivo Mohrmann.
The exhibition has been newly supplemented by five publications that focus on the restored artworks from various professional perspectives, including the views of those who were closest to the works, namely the restorers. The items were restored by Asgard Kleinbauerová (Germany) and Czech restorers Mario Král, Jakub Stretti, Jindřich Šlechta, and Monika Wolfová. The results of material analyses were processed into the publications by Janka and David Hradil from the ALMA Laboratory of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. The art-historical chapters were prepared and the publications edited by art historian Jitka Šrejberová from the Regional Museum and Gallery in Most. The graphic design of the books was created by akad. mal. Marek Jodas.
The exhibition was originally planned until April 18, 2021, but due to the pandemic situation, it was extended until May 29, 2021, thanks to the understanding of all cooperating institutions. It can currently be viewed on the museum's and Ústí Region's websites in the form of 3D virtual tour
