Alpine Longhorn Beetle (Rosalia alpina)

The Alpine Longhorn Beetle is among the most beautiful European beetles. Its attractiveness is contributed not only by its striking blue-black coloration but also by its size. Some individuals of this species can grow to about 4 cm in size. The larvae develop in dead, yet still solid, beech wood. Adult beetles can be encountered in nature from June to September. It is classified as a legally protected species of wildlife, specifically in the critically endangered category.
